Someone needs to hold Emmitt Smith accountable for all this. It was he, after all, who showed America that real men can really dance. Thanks a lot, Emmitt. Because of you, millions of your fellow males can't come up with an excuse good enough to convince their significant others that they shouldn't have to sit around watching couples swirl to music.

Not since John Travolta was strutting his stuff under a disco ball have so many people cared so much. You beat Jerry Springer, trampled Tucker Carlson, and made Harry Hamlin look like he was standing still. The Nielsen Media Research people could count me among the households tuned in Monday night for two long hours of the premiere of "Dancing With The Stars."

TELEVISION has Dancing with the Stars and Dancing on Ice; now, get ready for dancing at work. Melbourne firms are joining the dance craze to try to promote team-building among staff.

Employees are being urged to do the rumba, foxtrot and cha-cha to lighten up intense meetings and conferences.

Shall we dance?

Team dancing promoter Tony Legg said yesterday dancing was a fun way to break down barriers between people. "It enhances confidence and self-esteem and encourages friendships and social awareness," he said. "It's fun - people can have a laugh."Mr Legg, who runs Sea Leggs Corporate Team Building, launched the program two months ago.

Dancing supervisors come to the workplace or sessions are organised at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in the city. Mr Legg, who also runs team-building programs for sailing and cooking, conceded that the popularity of TV dance shows was behind his latest venture.

Arthur Murray state manager Jackie Drake said some firms just wanted to give their staff a chance to unwind. She said power roles were sometimes reversed in dance. "It is really tough for some executives who are very confident in what they're doing, and they have to come in with their staff and do something they don't have a clue about."

TV Fueling Dance Revival

Arthur Murray the Business Pioneer

When Murray licensed his name and teaching method in 1946,  almost a decade before hamburger chains McDonalds’s and Burger King, he joined a handful of other entrepreneurial businesses, including Howard Johnson and A & W Root Beer, that were ushering in modern-day franchising in post-war America. In few places has that system caught on more than in Florida. The state is home to more than 50,000 franchises, numbers exceeded only in California and Texas and more than 250 franchisors are headquartered here. But Arthur Murray, which moved its operations here in 1965, can make the claim of having more franchising experience than any other Florida based company.

New Generations

The tide began to turn as Latin-music crossover stars like Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin created rhythms with a mainstream appeal that introduced a new generation to partner dancing. “People started saying we want to learn how to really dance to these songs and not just freestyle it,” said Murdock, Arthur Murray vice president for marketing. At the turn of the millennium came films such as “Shall we Dance with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere, and TV shows like “Dancing with the Stars”  that have helped “make ballroom dancing literally a household word,” said Murdock.

Arthur Murray the Marketing Pioneer

Born Austria-Hungry in 1895, Murray was constantly exploring new markets. In 1920 in Atlanta, he organised the first “radio dance,” broadcasting a bands live performance from the campus of Georgia Tech to a group of dancers down town. In 1923, he helped usher in the era of mail-order advertising by selling foot print-diagram dance lessons through the mail. And in the 1950’s, Murray embraced television and launched Arthur Murray’s Dance Party on ABC, the same network that half a century later would help revitalise the studios that bear his name.
